SK have undertaken a variety of ecological survey and assessment work for United Utilities nationwide, but primarily serving Cumbria. SK are currently involved in both essential watercourse maintanence works and major infrastructure projects. Our staff are fully trained and experienced in electric fishing and can offer fish rescue services for projects of any size.
CASE STUDIES
WEST CUMBRIA WATER PROJECT
The West Cumbria Water Project is a major project, currently in the planning phase, being undertaken by United Utilities to construct a 100km pipeline connecting Thirlmere to West Cumbria. SK have supplied Ricardo (the framework contractor) with a large number of ecological assessment services to date including:

River Corridor/River Habitat Assessment;

Great Crested Newt Surveys;

Ancient Woodland Surveys; and

Bat Surveys.
This is a long term project, expected to take up to nine years to complete, and the ecological survey work is ongoing.
ELECTRIC FISHING
SK works in partnership with Ash Bennett Ecology on electric fishing projects. They have undertaken a large number of planned fish rescue projects for United Utilities as part of in-stream construction works and dewatering operations.
PIPELINE REPAIRS
SK have been instrumental in facilitating emergency pipeline repairs throughout Cumbria by providing an ecological watching brief to oversee channel repairs, directional drilling and coffer damming. We also provide turbidity monitoring for work undertaken in sensitive areas
